Squads to destroy ganja cultivation in State

Published on:

Multiagency squads comprising officers from the police, excise, revenue and forest departments will be formed in each district to destroy cannabis (ganja) cultivation. large-scale cannabis cultivation in the State has now become a major headache for the police as it is believed that the cultivation is being done in an organised way to reap rich dividends for the Maoist organisations.

In order to destroy the cannabis cultivation and block the fund inflow to the Red rebels, the State police organisation has taken up an initiative to form a squad which would be given targets to destroy the cultivations. At a conference held in the police headquarters here on Friday, officers from the concerned departments decided that sustained raids would be undertaken in the areas where ganja is cultivated on large scales.

The squads would work jointly to destroy the cultivation in a more scientific way and work coordinately to identify all the stakeholders involved in such clandestine activities and arrest them. District-wise targets were fixed at the conference and it was unanimously resolved that cannabis cultivation would be destroyed in a more vigorous way. It was revealed at the conference that cannabis cultivation was destroyed in over 1,575 acres of land during 2011-12, and in the subsequent year, cultivation in over 1,300 acres were also destroyed.
