The students of the Statistics department of Sambalpur University held dharna in front of the Mathematics department protesting the merger of their department with the Mathematics department and creation of a new department, called the School of Mathematical Sciences.
“With the merger of our department with that of Mathematics, an important department and subject will lose its identity. Further the certificate of the Statistics students will not be honoured in places other than Sambalpur University,” alleged the students, urging the VC to rethink over the decision.
On November 13, the students of the Statistics department had given a memorandum to the VC in this regard.
They further mentioned that if the VC doesn’t take appropriate step to separate the department by November 17, they would hold a sit- in.
They also locked up the main door of the Mathematics department.
