The Collector of Sambalpur on Monday suspended a teacher of a Tribal Welfare Residential School Jagdish Satapathy  Girshchandrapur under Naktideul block after a girl student of the school succumbed to her burn injuries at the VSS Medical College Hospital. The girl had fallen into a hot curry container meant for mid-day meal (MDM).

“Jagdish Satapathy, who was in-charge of the MDM of the school, has been suspended for negligence in duty,” informed Collector Balwant Singh.

The victim, Banita Kanhar of Class III, on Saturday accidentally fell into the hot curry cauldron during the distribution of MDM. With severe burn injuries, she was rushed to the PHC of Girshchandrapur and later to the VSS Hospital at Burla.

From Burla, she was again referred to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack, where she died in the wee hours of Sunday.

After the news spread, the irate locals blocked the Kisinda-Godhidhip road for five hours on Sunday demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the poor family of the girl, dismissal of the headmaster of the school and posting of a doctor at the Girishchandrapur PHC.

“We have also recommended action against the headmaster of the school to the Government,” said the Collector.
