The road safety committee here held a meeting to chalk out an action plan on preventing accidents in future.

The meeting, chaired by Collector Samarth Verma, discussed the reasons causing frequent road accidents in the district. The Collector asked the officials of PWD, RD and NH to select the vulnerable points on the road in their respective areas so that corrective measures could be taken up to curb accidents.

One official citing the example of neighbouring Deogarh district said that a simple barricade on the ‘U’ turn of the Gailo ghat can curb accident to a large extent.

The members of the road safety committee pointed out the spots, dangerous turnings, rumbles, speed breakers on the roads of the district including Sambalpur town itself that cause frequent accidents. The Collector who is chairman of the road safety committee asked the officials to rectify the mistakes in time bound programme.

“The reason behind the death of a small girl child in Ainthapali just three days back was an unscientific speed breaker. There are many such speed breakers in the town with or without sign or zebra crossing before it to caution the drivers which are causing mishaps,” said Siba Sankar Nanda, a member of the committee. The Collector assured the committee to take action on the unscientific speed breakers and on the suggestion of the members.

The Collector further asked the officials of the Education department present in the meeting to educate the students including their guardians about road safety and discourage use of two wheelers by students under the age of 18.
