Several organisations and people at large have mounted pressure on police to arrest Rohit Singhania, a chartered accountant (CA), who was accused of abetting suicide of a trainee girl in his firm.
As per information, Rupali Dey of Badbazar, a gold medalist and a meritorious student throughout her career, was undergoing her internship in the CA firm of Singhania. Dey was a student of CA course.
But the girl was under severe mental pressure due to the rude behaviour and misconduct of Singhania. On last Saturday, she committed suicide by taking excessive sleeping pills. But in the suicide note, she clearly mentioned that the CA tortured her mentally and even threatened her to spoil her career.
The mother of the girl lodged an FIR in the town police station against Singhania. Nearly six days have passed, but the accused is yet to be arrested.
Meanwhile, Senpark Surakshya Samity, Narishakti Sangathana and Sambalpur Bikahs Manch, among others, protested the delay in the arrest of Singhania and carried out a candle rally inside the town in her memory. Several woman organisations also held rasta roko inside the town demanding arrest of Singhania.
“We fail to understand why police are not arresting Singhania,” asked social activist Anjali Rao. Sambalpur Bikahs Manch convenor and Sambalpur Jilla Parishad president Sobhangini Naik also put similar question concerning police inaction. Dey’s class fellows are also a dismayed lot.
Several organisations also approached the District Collector and SP of Sambalpur for a quick action against the accused. However, town police station IIC PK Sahu said that the matter was under investigation and police would take right action at right time.
