Sporadic violence mars bandh

Despite Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik’s instructions to observe a ‘peaceful’ bandh, several party workers resorted to violence in some parts of the State on Monday. Reports said Congress workers stormed into the office of Kakatpur Tehsil office in Puri district in the presence of the Tehsildar and allegedly thrashed a staff besides damaging the office gate.

Party workers also barged into the BDO office in Remuna in Baleswar district and allegedly ransacked properties. Similar act by Congress workers at the Works Department office in Mayurbhanj was also reported. Likewise, party workers broke the gate of Nabarangpur Collectorate and locked it after they found the office functioning during the bandh.

PCC chief Patnaik formed a three-member committee headed by senior party leader Chiranjib Biswal to probe into the incidents. Action would be taken against the Congress workers found guilty, Patnaik said.
