Samajwadi Party (SP) State president Rabi Behera in a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday requested him to implement 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in Odisha in admissions to educational institutions and jobs in the State Government on the line of the Maratha reservation upheld by the Bombay High Court on Thursday.

Behera stated that the Government of India implemented the Mandal Commission report on August 7, 1990 and Government of Odisha also implemented 27 per cent reservation in jobs for OBCs in 1994 till 2007.

The Government of India implemented educational reservation for OBCs in IITs, IIMs and AIIMS and PGI for the last 14 years.

But OBC students are deprived of reservation in admission in medical, engineering and other educational Institutions in the State.

They enjoy only 11.25 per cent reservation in State Government jobs, he stated.

The Bombay High Court verdict upheld 13 per cent reservation for Marathas in jobs and 12 per cent reservation to them in admission into educational institutions.

The Government of Odisha is also preparing in full swing to implement 10 per cent EWS quota in admission and employment as present. “Hence, we urge upon you to implement 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in Odisha in the field of admission into educational institutions and jobs of the State Government,” Behera stated.
