The Samajwadi Party on Wednesday sought the intervention of the Odisha Human Rights Commission over the killing of a traditional fisherman in a shootout off the Gahirmatha coast.
Patrolling personnel had gunned down Akbar Ali during an encounter when Baleswar-based fishermen in a dozen of trawlers, allegedly after trespassing into the no fishing zone of the marine sanctuary, were fishing in the sea.
Demanding an immediate impartial inquiry into the death of the deceased, party State unit president Rabi Behera urged the rights body to provide `20 lakh compensation to the kin of the victim. The party too requested the panel to ensure protection of the livelihoods of the traditional fishermen in coastal district of the State.
