The State Samajwadi Party (SP) staged a demonstration in front of the State Assembly here demanding a halt to the construction of barrages on the Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh and the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh and submitted a memorandum to the Assembly Speaker demanding passing of a unanimous resolution in the House against these projects.
Party activists led by its president Rabi Behera also demanded intervention of the Prime Minister in the matter and said the latter should direct the Chhattisgarh Government to stop the constructions on the Mahanadi immediately.
Behera said these constructions violate the federal spirit of the Indian Construction and the water sharing dispute and environmental laws. A five-member delegation led by Behera met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh and submitted the memorandum addressed to the Speaker.
