Ceramic artist and painter M Sovan Kumar presented a paper on “My World of Ceramic” in the 172nd Meet the Artist programme held in the Jatin Das Centre of Arts (JDCA) premises on Saturday.

Terracotta is such a medium in which you don’t have to invest much money, but you can get good outputs, said Sovan at the time of presenting the paper. He also said about the procedure of making ceramic items. He showcased his terracotta items and ceramic works through a slide show presentation.

He said painter Dinanath Pathi is his first guru. “He showed me the way in ceramic world,” said Sovan, adding that Professor Balbir Singh Katt of the Banaras Hindu University, a renowned sculptor, was his great source of inspiration.

He added, “In today’s world though concept is more important than medium, still ceramic is a major medium.” To promote and spread ceramic medium, we are organising many workshops, seminars and exhibitions on ceramic through the lalit Kala Akademi, he said. Though we artists are talented, we feel we have less weightage in Odisha than in other States, said Sovan.

Sovan, a student of BK Arts College in the city also studied ceramic design in Central Academy of Art and Design in Beijing in 1995. He had several solo exhibitions and also participated in many national and international exhibitions. At present he is working for the development of pottery and potters of Odisha.
