With the intervention of the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) here, a month-old girl allegedly sold for Rs500 by her mother to an eunuch was retrieved on Monday and handed over to the baby’s grandmother for custody.
“We retrieved the baby girl from the eunuch and left her under the custody of her grandmother near Cuttack railway station,” said DCPO Pragati Mohanty. According to reports, a middle-aged Tamil woman visibly appearing to be mentally ill had sold her newborn for Rs500.
When the reports appeared in newspapers, the DCPO conducted an enquiry and traced the girl with a eunuch in the Tangi area of the district. Although the eunuch claims that there was no monetary deal in the incident, the DCPO is contemplating for a thorough enquiry into the matter.
