The Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (IIT BBS) has successfully commissioned a solar power generating station of 490-KW capacity at its permanent campus.

IIT Bhubaneswar Director Prof RV Raja Kumar inaugurated the project in which rooftops of all the existing buildings were utilised for installing solar panels and power generating equipments.

The project would not only supply power to the campus through solar generation but would also provide enough data and information for doing research work on solar PV renewable energy systems. The solar PV panels were successfully commissioned on May 14 for testing and the generation is found to be fully intact till date.

Prof Kumar said the institute has decided to make the campus “green” and the solar power generation is one step in this endeavour alongside of undertaking a massive tree plantation drive of 30,000 trees during the last three rainy seasons.

He also said that the institute has already awarded a contract to create STP and ETP in the campus through the NBCC and it is also working on rainwater harvesting in the campus with the buildings already designed to be equipped with a rainwater collection system.
