Governor SC Jamir, while releasing the book Gotie Jibana Jathesta Nuhe here on Monday, said, “Civilisation in general and this nation in particular need journalists with compassion, love and concern.”
The book is the Odia translation of the book Beyond the lines by eminent journalist and writer Kuldip Nayar, which is his autobiography.
The book has been translated by author Gaurahari Das and Mahendra Prasad, which contains the politics of Odisha, freedom struggle of South Asia and the last days of lal Bahadur Shastri’s life.
The Governor said, “Journalists should strive to integrate, not divide, those who join hearts not break them.”
“Journalism is a profession that requires impeccable integrity, infinite patience, dogged adherence to truth, impartiality and accountability, and all these will be possible if young and aspiring journalists learn the finer aspects of self-restraint and self-regulation, he said.”
He added that in a democracy, more so when the democracy is the largest and the most vibrant one in the world, India, there is absolutely no space for intolerance and personal vendetta.
Praising the works of Nayar, the Governor said, “Journalists like Mr Nayar attach compassion, care, love concern and humane touch to events they store in memory which the computer may not have the ability to do.”
He stressed the need to translate more literature from the North East States to languages like Odia so that wrong perceptions about the people from the region can be dispelled.
Nayar, who was present, exhorted the youth to fight for their rights and work for removal of economic disparities from the society. Eminent writer Harprasad Das presided over the meeting.
