Slum women sensitised on menstruation hygiene

Published on:

Despite all campaigns for women empowerment, still there are a number of things which need to be changed. While talking about women’s health hygiene, most of the people ignore issues related to menstrual hygiene,” said Dr Chayanika Mishra, addressing women of Nilamadhab Basti here at a programme held on the International Women’s Day on Tuesday.

An UK based NGO, the Practical Action, in association with the CCWD started the unique campaign ‘Sunalo Sakhi’ targeting the young girls and women. They have adopted 15 slums in the city discussing and talking about menstruation, the hygiene and better ways to deal with it.

Designed specifically to bridge the knowledge gap of menstruation and adolescent hygiene practices, the programme ‘Sunalo Sakhi’ is getting momentum in the city. This unique radio show being aired by the 90.4 SOA radio is now much popular among girls in most of the slums.

Practical Action programme coordinator Dr Birupakshya Dixit was present as the chief guest and vowed for more men to be sensitised. Child literature expert Sarat Nayak also talked about gender disparity. Pragati Mahila Mahasangha members were present. A signature campaign was launched on the occasion.
