SJTA drops bidding plan; all channels to cover fest

Published on:

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) on Tuesday decided to drop its Rath Yatra telecast bidding plan and allowed all the television channels to broadcast the annual festival beginning from July 4.

SJTA chief Pradipta Mohapatra said all channels are free to do the live telecast of the festival as usual.

The temple management has decided to grant telecast rights to all channels but with some conditions, he added.

Sources said the TV channels earn significant amounts as revenue from advertisements during the month-long festival.

But the temple does not earn anything from it. The bidding process was proposed to be launched to raise funds for the Jagannath Temple.

The administration has now decided to levy a fee from the broadcasters if they telecast the Rath Yatra with commercial advertisements in between the programmes.

But there would be no fee for those who telecast it without any advertisements, the sources added.
