Six new prisons to start soon; jail reforms in offing

The State Government is going to open six new jails soon, said Additional DG of Police and IG (Prisons) Pradip Kapoor during his visit here on Sunday.

Mention may be made that most of the jails in the Sate are currently overcrowded causing inconvenience to the prisoners and administrative problems for the jail authorities.

To ease the situation and to remove overcrowding of the prisons, the proposal for opening of six new jails and recruitment of 400 warders is on anvil for effective management of jails, said Kapoor while interacting with mediapersons.

He said, “Our priority is to bring about necessary reforms for the jails, change the mindsets of the prisoners and ensure their wellbeing.”

To a query, Kapoor said that there is only one Jail Academy now operating in the State. The Government is contemplating to open another Jail Academy and modernisation of the existing jammer system in the jails to strengthen jail security.

Replying to a question pertaining to the recent turmoil and custodial death of an accused in the Bhanjanagar jail, he said the investigation into the incident is on and all Jail Superintendents have been directed to keep a strict vigil on the miscreants so as to make the security system of the jails more effective and meaningful.

To a query on the rumour about shifting of the Jail Training School from Brahmapur, Kapoor made it clear that there is absolutely no such proposal for shifting the school from Brahmapur.

Earlier, the passing-out ceremony of the 17th batch of the six-month internship course of Assistant Jailors and Sub-Jailors was held in the premises of the training school at which Kapoor received guard of honour as the chief guest.

School Principal Bira Kishore Das presented a brief report on the genesis of the school, the different course curriculums, and the various new proposals on the anvil. Brahmapur Range Jail DIG Gopabandhu Mallik was the guest of honour.

Among others, Training Instructor BB Pattnaik, Jail Superintendent Raghunath Majhi and DIG Amitabh Thakur were present.
