Side scan sonar installed at P'dip

Published on:

A state-of-the-art side scan sonar, made by the Klein Marine System of the USA, has been installed in the Paradip Port’s new modern survey launch for bathymetric survey and side scanning of objects on the sea floor.

Paradip is the first port among the Major Ports in the country to have this equipment.

During a survey carried out by using the side scan sonar near the wreck of MV Black Rose, the first 2D images of the wreck were seen since the vessel sank in 2009. From these images, it was found that the position of the sunken vessel is static and that no threat is posed for movement of ships. This would also help check the position of the vessel at regular intervals in order to ascertain if the vessel has shifted or not.
