The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Panchayati Raj Department to pay monetary compensation of Rs 20,000 to the minor girl student who was injured in a school after a wall caved in on her in Dhenkanal district in 2014. The SHRC acting on a petition of Angul-based Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain said since the Panchayati Raj Department had built the school building which collapsed on one Minu Behera, a Class VII student at Badasahi Project UP Scholl on November 28, 2014, hence, it is liable to pay compensation to the injured. “It is fortunate that the little girl has recovered and suffered from no serious ailment, but for the trauma she had undergone and still undergoing, the commission feels it appropriate to recommend the Government, ie, the Panchayati Raj department to pay monetary compensation of Rs 20,000 to Khulana Behera, the mother of the victim girl,” the commission order stated. It directed the Dhenkanal Collector to see that its order complied with within two weeks.
