A mentally-challenged 40-year-old woman reportedly spent five days with her mother’s body in her house before being rescued by police at Basanti Colony on Monday night.
The deceased woman was identified as Manju Puri (70). Her body was found in a decomposed state.
Locals, who had experienced foul smell emanating from the house, informed the Uditnagar police as they suspected foul play. Police reached the spot, entered the house by breaking open the door and recovered the body. The cops also rescued the mentally-challenged woman and admitted her to the Rourkela Government Hospital.
The body was sent for postmortem. Police said the cause of the death can be ascertained after submission of the autopsy report.
Notably, the deceased woman’s husband Narottam Puri had died of Covid-19 last year.
