Thursday was a happy day for a man here who was spending his time in the Sundargarh Jail for last 16 years as a lifer.
He was released prematurely from the jail on Thursday for his good conduct and the jail authorities gave him Rs 5,000 from the prison welfare fund.
Raut Munda (37), alias Mathura, a resident of Dengula New Colony under Koira police station, had been arrested in a murder case and was lodged in the Sundargarh Jail on January 7, 1998 as a under trial prisoner. On February 11, 2004, the Sessions Judge Court, convicted him and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for life. He was spending his life in the Sundargarh Jail ever since.
However, as per the procedure for premature release, the jail authorities had recommended Munda’s name and that of five other prisoners in 2015 to the law Department through IG, Prison, as they had completed 14 years in jail and during this period their conduct was good. The jail authorities received a memo from IG, Prison on Wednesday night for premature release of life convict Munda only.
