Sexual assault in K'handi orphanage; one arrested

Two orphan children staying in child care institution Naheru Seva Sangh (NSS) were allegedly sexually assaulted by the in-charge.

The victims in a complaint to Additional District Judge(ADJ) alleged orphanage in-charge Munna Khan continued to exploit them sexually for past several days, said Sadar Police Station IIC Ramakrushna Pati. Acting on their statement, police on Tuesday arrested Khan (50).

The NSS has been running the orphanage for last 30 years for children who have no parents or guardians, or whose parents cannot look after them. About 117 children live there and 51 are girls.

Their relatives brought the victim girls to the orphanage three years ago, after their parents passed away. The girls’ ordeal began two months ago when staff of the orphanage started sexually abusing them, showing pornography and touching their private parts. Unable to bear the harassment, the victims had earlier attempted to run away from the orphanage.

Police are questioning the orphanage staff, including the NSS director and authorities of the District Child Protection Unit in Kalahandi. They also interrogated the boarders to ascertain if there were more cases of abuse in the orphanage. Police are trying to trace the other culprits linked to the case.
