Facing new challenges like cyber crime and jehadi from organised criminals and a typical law and order problem like egg attacks in public on Chief Minister and other Ministers, top cops of the State on Thursday deliberated on key policing issues here at the police headquarters on the first day of the 59th Senior Police Officers’ Conference.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who is also the Home Minister, will join the valedictory session of the conference in Bhubaneswar on Friday. For the first time in the history of the Odisha police, the conference venue has been split between the twin cities. Reports, however, suggested that recent spurt in egg attacks on Ministers prompted the organisers to do so.
Other basics of policing like man management, modernisation, traffic, Maoist issues, intelligence failure, human trafficking, crimes against women and children, missing women and children were discussed at the conference on Thursday, which is an annual exercise to review, introspect, debate and discuss so as to formulate strategies to handle the emerging challenges.
Over a hundred senior police officers, including district SPs, battalion commandants, range heads, IPS officers under training and heads of various police establishments attended the conference, which was inaugurated by DGP KB Singh. However, the other DGP Binay Bhusan Behera, who heads Fire Services, Home Guards and Civil Defence, did not attend the conference as he was on leave.
DGP Singh stressed on improving the image of police by effectively handling the functioning of community policing, reception desk and use of social media and quick redress of public grievances. He also stressed on improvement of traffic policing and a transparent and fair recruitment system.
