Selvam Trust deposits Rs2 crore with SC Registry

Tamil Nadu-based Selvam Educational and Charitable Trust which owns the Sardar Rajas Medical College and Hospital at Jaring in Kalahandi district on Monday informed the Supreme Court that it had deposited Rs 2 crore in the court registry as per its earlier directive.

The trust informed the apex court during a hearing of the case by a two-Judge bench. The next hearing would be held in the second week of August.

During the last hearing of the case on May 9 this year, a two-judge bench of Justice Deepak Misra and Justice C Nagappan had directed the trust to deposit Rs 2 crore in the court’s registry on or before June 25.

In the event of Selvam failing to deposit the money by the stipulated date, a non-bailable warrant (NBW) would be issued against its promoters, the bench had warned.

The Supreme Court on May 9 warned the trust of issuing non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against its management unless it deposits Rs 2 crore with the court by June 25. However, the trust complied with the court order after missing several deadlines.

Notably, the 124 students of two batches (2013-14 and 2014-15) were shifted to three Bhubaneswar-based private medical colleges, Hi-Tech Medical College, Institute of Medical Sciences and Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences after Medical Council of India (MCI) withdrew its nod to the medical college to continue citing poor infrastructure and lack of adequate faculty members.

Established in a public-private partnership mode, the college had admitted students only for two academic sessions (2013-14 and 2014-15). The State Government had given Rs 10 crore and 25 acres to the trust after it signed an MoU with the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) for establishment of the college in 2004.
