'Secular front' to emerge after elections: Yechury

Published on:

CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury on Friday said efforts to form a ‘secular-democratic’ front with non-Congress and non-BJP parties at the Centre are on and it would take shape after the general elections.

“All those who are saying that the secular democratic front is a nonstarter should know that the parties who are opposing the BJP-led NDA and Congress-led UPA are committed for a corruption free and development oriented secular alternative Government at the Centre,” Yechury told mediapersons here.

To a query, Yechury said, “I strongly endorse the statement of Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik that ‘It is too early to form such a front.’ He also said the left parties like the CPI and the CPI(M) in Odisha would fight together in the forthcoming elections in order to strengthen the left forces.

CPI(M) State secretary Janardan Pati reiterated that the party would go it alone in the ensuing polls. In the 2009 elections, the CPI(M) had seat adjustments with the BJD.
