Seawater ingress: Untold miseries for B'swar farmers

Published on:

Farmers of several villages near the seacoast in the district are bearing the brunt of tidal surge these days. They have been badly hit as the Kharif crops are at a tender stage due to late monsoon. They fear that the ingress of tidal water with salinity into farm land may cause a massive loss to the crops as well as to their lands.

Not only the paddy crops, but vegetables as well suffered due to saline water inundation which was witnessed on Monday last in the seaside villages near Chandipur, Kasafal and adjacent villages. The saline water entered into the villages also.

Most of the affected villagers said, “The sea water caused massive damages. The human habitations in the low lying area suffered a lot and have been in panic. “

They further said that breaches in the saline embankment caused the flooding. There could be more such incidents if the breaches are not repaired and weak patches in the embankments not strengthened, they said.

The district administration, on the other hand, informed that the concerned Tehsildars have been asked to submit a report on the loss and damages, besides the steps initiated to restore the embankments.
