Schoolgirl victim of ‘honour killing’ in city; kin claim murder

A Class-X girl was found hanging from a tree in the premises of her house with hands and legs tied at Dumduma Phase-II under the Khandagiri police station here on Sunday night. The deceased was daughter of one Maina Jena.

Though the deceased’s family members on Monday lodged  complaint with police alleging that miscreants killed her and hanged her body from the tree to make it look like a suicide, locals suspect it to be a case of honour killing.

The nieghbours allege that family bickered quite often over the girl’s love affair. The family had been opposing her relationship with a youth and an altercation had occurred on the fateful night. Moreover, the towel with which her legs were tied was of her father, claimed a local. Police are investigating the death from different aspects besides detaining a local youth for interrogation.

On the basis of circumstantial evidence and preliminary investigation, police suspect it to be a case of honour killing. Khandagiri PS IIC Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra said the family had recovered the body before police reached the spot and the girl had no other injury mark on her body. And the detained youth has confessed his love for the girl.

“The body has been sent for postmortem. The reason behind her death can be ascertained once the report comes in,” added Mohapatra.
