In a fourth case of its kind in the State in the last one month, a minor girl student of a school in Koraput district has given birth to a child. The Class-VIII student of the Kandulabeda Sevashram School delivered a baby boy. While the child died shortly after the birth, the girl was hospitalised. The girl was first admitted to the Boipariguda Community Health Centre (CHC), from where doctors subsequently referred her to the Jeypore Sub-Divisional Hospital after her condition turned critical.
“The patient is stable now. She is out of danger and there is nothing to worry. We will keep her under observation for another two to days and then discharge her,” said a doctor of the Jeypore Sub-Divisional Hospital. The Jeypore police are investigating the case after an FIR was lodged by her parents at the Boipariguda police station. The district administration, on the other hand, pointed out that the girl had left the Sevashram School for home since December last.
“We are investigating the case and have spoken to the girl. We have found out that the person she has named as the father of the baby doesn’t belong to that school,” Jeypore SDO Rajendra Kumar Senapati was quoted as saying. Notably, in another such event in the district, a Class VI student of the Umuri Sevashram School in Umuri village under Jeypore block had delivered a baby in the school hostel. Minor motherhood and pregnancy of school girls have proved to be a major headache of late for the ST, SC Development Department after at least four such cases surfaced from various ashram schools in the State in the last one month.
