In a shocking incident, a neurosurgeon of the SCB Medical College Hospital here, while performing a critical surgery on Friday, fainted in the operation theatre (OT). Dr Srikant Das, an assistant professor of the department, reportedly lost consciousness due to giddiness as the ACs in the OT were not functioning. Other doctors, however, took care of the patient under the scalpel.
A similar incident had also taken place in the hospital earlier this month and many surgeons are reluctant to perform surgeries as the air-conditioners in the OTs are functioning ever since the summer season began. Sources alleged that at least 45 ACs of the hospital are defunct and both patients and the doctors are finding it extremely difficult to cope up with the situation as the mercury in the city is hovering around 40 degree Celsius for past one week.
When contacted, Advocate Pravat Ranjan Dash, who is assisting the Odisha High Court in health-related matters, confirmed about the Friday’s unfortunate incident and also admitted that this is the second such incident this month.
“The advocates’ committee will visit the hospital to take stock of the situation,” Dash said, adding that he has already brought about this precarious situation in the hospital to the notice of RDC Dr Arabinda Padhee.
