The striking house surgeons of the SCB Medical College Hospital here on Friday decided to suspend their cease-wok stir for 15 days and review their decision basing on the State Government’s initiatives in fulfilling their demands.

After a general body meeting of the House Surgeon Association late on Friday evening, it was decided that the house surgeons would resume their work from Saturday morning.

The decision to postpone the strike was apparently taken after Director of Medical Education and Training (DMET) Prakash Mohapatra assured the striking doctors that at least two of their three demands would be fulfilled. Following Tuesday’s scuffle between a house surgeon and an emotional relative of a patient, the house surgeons resorted to cease work stir from Wednesday morning demanding adequate security inside the Hospital for their safety.

The house surgeons soon added enhancement of their monthly stipend and removal of Hospital Superintendent Shyama Kanungo from her post in their demand list.

Earlier in the afternoon the DMET met a delegation of the striking doctors and assured them that two of their demands are genuine and the Government would take steps to fulfill them soon. Sources said the DMET was referring to the demands of adequate security inside the campus and increasing the stipend of the house surgeons.
