SC sets May 2 for hearing on Mahanadi dispute

The Supreme Court has fixed May 2 for the next hearing of the injunction suit filed by Odisha against Chhattisgarh over construction of dams and barrages in the Mahanadi upstream.

Reports said that after hearing arguments from both the sides in the Mahanadi case on Tuesday, the apex court summoned the Central Attorney General in the case. The AG has been asked to appear in the court on May 2 to clarify the Central Government’s stand on the issue.

Notably, the Odisha Government moved the Supreme Court on December 4 , 2016 seeking a stay on all the construction of dams and barrages on Mahanadi by Chhattisgarh. The suit was filed under Article 131 of the Constitution. Odisha is claiming that the illegal construction unilaterally planned by the neighbouring State hampers Odisha’s interests.

Earlier, the Odisha Government had filed a statutory complaint before the Centre on November 22 demanding formation of a tribunal under the Interstate Water Dispute Act, 1956. As per the 1956 Act, the Centre may form it within a year to solve the dispute.
