Former Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjeev Marik on Friday recorded his initial statement at the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court here in the criminal defamation suit filed by him against former MP and former IGP Anadi Sahu.

“Since the matter is sub judice, we cannot discuss its facts in the public. But I can say that whatever Press statement Anadibabu had made on February 20 are baseless and have damaged my reputation,” Marik told reporters after recording his statement.

“My client recorded his initial statement and told the court that allegations made by Anadi Sahu against him have no basis and how it has affected his and his family members. He told the court that allegations made by Anadi Sahu that he had given protection to criminals or he was shunted out from the DGP’s post for transferring some police officers, that he had a bank account in which he had received Rs 2.5 crore were untrue,” said Chinmaya Mohanty, Marik’s counsel to reporters.

Copies of some newspapers of February 21, 2016 in which Sahu’s statement was published have been submitted in the court, Mohanty added.

On March 1, Marik had filed the criminal defamation suit against Sahu at SDJM Court under IPC sections, 500, 501 and 502. later on March 4, he filed a civil defamation suit for damage of Rs 50 lakh against Sahu in the Civil Court (Senior Division) Bhubaneswar.

The court on March 7 served summons Sahu to appear before it in person or through his attorney on April 5 in connection with the civil defamation suit filed by Marik against him.
