The Parlakhemundi Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court here on Saturday sentenced Sangram Mohanty, son of Maoist mediator and Jana Adhikar Manch convenor Dandapani Mohanty, to five months imprisonment for possessing some items illegally inside Parlakhemundi sub-jail here, where he was kept after his arrest since December last year.
Besides, JMFC Raj Kishore Das also slapped Rs 200 fine on him failing which he would undergo an additional 15 days imprisonment.
During a joint raid on March 1 this year undertaken by the district and police administration under the leadership of Gajapati SP, police had recovered cigarette, a mobile set, two Aircel SIM cards, a mobile charger, perfume, soap, a shaving kit, fruits, biscuit, banana and some other items, including foods, from his cell. He is housed there as an under trial.
However, Santosh Kumar Sahoo and Nilachal Mallick who were arrested on charges of providing these items to Sangram, were acquitted as the prosecution has failed to prove the charges against them, said Sangram’s counsel Swarup Kumar Pal.
Police arrested Sangram in December last year near Adava in Gajapati district for his alleged involvement in Maoist activities. Now, Sangram is housed at the Brahmapur jail.
