Sambalpur Jailor suspended after probe

Published on:

Additional Director-General (Prisons) Arun Kumar Ray on Thursday suspended tainted Jailor of Sambalpur Circle Jail Sushant Kumar Rout from whose chamber Rs 16 lakh in cash was recovered during a raid by the police on June 5.

Official sources said Rout has been placed under suspension basing on the report submitted by two DIG-level officers in connection with the seizure of the cash, nine mobiles, narcotics and other objectionable items from his chamber. A joint probe was earlier ordered to ascertain the source of the money that was recovered.

Though Rout had then claimed that the amount that was seized was meant for purchasing items for the jail and money collected for a Hanuman Mandi, he could not prove the claims.

In a bid to curb the crime syndicates operating from the confines of jails, a massive crackdown was launched in over 13 prisons across the State on June 5.

The raids were conducted in Choudwar jail, Jharpada, Sambalpur, Keonjhar and other prominent jails in the State.
