A team from Kutra block office has gone to Amritsar on Friday to bring Birju Kulu, who had been freed from Pakistan jail after 20 years.

Birju, a resident of Katang village under Kutra block in Sundargarh district, was another civilian of the country who was imprisoned by a Pakistan court on suspicion of being a RAW agent.

According to reports, Birju, the only son of his father Kamlis Kulu, was said to be an intellectually disabled person since his childhood. He had left his family at an age of 25 years and moved somewhere. His family searched him everywhere but failed to trace his whereabouts. The family was shocked when details about him was revealed by the Kutra police last year.

Sources said Birju had mistakenly entered in Pakistan after crossing the Indian border due to mental illness. The Pakistan army caught him suspecting him to be a spying agent from India. The civilian was lodged at a jail in Lohore after being awarded 20 years imprisonment. After finishing his jail term, he was released on October 26 and the Pakistan army had handed him over to the Indian authorities.  Following his release from Pakistan, he was admitted to a Covid hospital at Narayanganjagarh in Amritsar for treatment. When his arrival at Amritsar reached his native place, family members of Birju and the people of the locality celebrated by beating drum and by dancing.

The district administration had started preparation to bring Birju to his home. On Friday, block officials of Kutra led by Welfare Extension Officer Madan Singh and another two persons went to Amritsar by a Bolero vehicle. Rajgangpur MLA Razen Ekka and Kutra Block Development Officer Manas Ranjan Ray and other officials of Kutra block office were present when the team left for Amritsar to bring Birju. MLA  Ekka showed green flag and wished them a nice journey.
