Pandemonium continued to prevail in the Odisha Assembly on Saturday as opposition BJP members protested suspension of its two legislators from rest of the ongoing Monsoon Session.
Unable to run the house smoothly, Speaker Pramila Mallick adjourned the House several times.
As soon as the House assembled for the Question Hour, the BJP members rushed to the Well and shouted slogans demanding withdrawal of the suspension of two party members and expunge of the derogatory remark made by BJD MLA Arun Sahoo on the “mental health” of the Leader of Opposition Jayanarayan Mishra (BJP).
Notably, BJP MLAs Mohan Charan Majhi and Mukesh Mahaling were suspended for the rest of the session after they allegedly threw pulses at the Speaker’s podium on Thursday.
The House could not conduct the Question Hour and Zero Hour and also failed to take up a debate on an adjournment motion.
Outside the Assembly, Leader of Opposition Jayanaryan Mishra said the ruling BJD does not want the House to run through deliberate adjournments.
“Whenever we are raising any issue, it is being omitted but it is not being dropped even if the ruling party members use unparliamentarily language and make personal accusations in the House. The Speaker is acting on the instructions of the ruling party. It is the Speaker’s job to take everybody together for smooth conduct of the Assembly,” Mishra stated.
Congress Legislature Party Leader Narasingha Mishra said it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that the House functions smoothly.
“Opposition will always ask questions, but the government should discuss the matter with the opposition. We were ready for discussion and we have not created any ruckus today as only a day is left for this session. It seems the government is on the back foot for whatever happened in the past. The ruling party is abusing by labelling someone mentally ill and other statements. This is totally uncalled for,” Mishra said.
