The Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has set up a 1-MW solar photo voltaic (PV) power generation system in the plant premises. This first megawatt-scale solar installation of the SAIl was inaugurated by SAIl Director (Technical) SS Mohanty on Sunday.
Set up at an expenditure of Rs 6.68 crore to meet renewable power obligation of the plant, the installation is expected to generate minimum 1.479 million units (MUs) of solar energy per annum. The RSP is also installing various other facilities to produce green energy. Seven more such systems are in the pipeline.
Feasibility study for installation of grid connected rooftop solar systems on major public buildings in Steel Township and steel plant is also being conducted.
The RSP is also in the process of setting up a 15-MW hydropower project on the downstream of Mandira Dam in collaboration with the GEDCOl.
