Robbers have looted more than Rs1 crore from the local branch of the Odisha Gramya Bank.
Notably, the bank was closed for the last three days, and it was yet to be ascertained when the heist took place.
The dacoits broke into the bank and looted Rs1,15,50,000 of Rs500 and Rs1000 denominations. The loot money consisted of old currency notes, which is believed to have been exchanged by customers after the demonetisation.
Police sources said three boxes containing the cash were broken by the unidentified burglars, who broke 18 locks including three in the strong room. While Rs8.85 crore was in the bank in 13 boxes which was to be deposited with the RBI, the robbers broke three of them. “Old notes of Rs500 and Rs100 amounting to Rs1.15 crore has been looted from the bank,” bank Branch Manager Nabakishore Sahu informed.
Interestingly, the bank is hardly a stone’s throw away from the Town police station.
While no guard was on duty during the time of the loot, police are hoping to get some leads from the CCTV footage.
