A truck loaded with maize worth Rs 8 lakh was stolen in transit in Nabarangpur district.

According to reports, Harish Chandra Sahu, a local businessman, was transporting maize amounting to Rs 8 lakh on December 22 from Singsari under Dabugam police station of Nabarangpur district to Baleswar. But he could know that no maize had been delivered at Baleswar.

Later, Sahu lodged a report in Dabugam police station. The police during an investigation ascertained that the truck disappeared near Sonpur. A team of police led by ASI BK Sahu and the complainant went to Sonpur and recovered the truck from a village.

On seeing the police, the accused drivers fled from the spot. The police ascertained that the accused altered the number plates and divulged fake names during maize loading to commit the theft.  The police seized the truck and brought the vehicle to the Dabugam police station.

In the meantime, though several days have passed, the local police have neither recovered the stolen maize nor arrested the accused, said Sahu. He further said that he is a petty businessman and had brought the maize on credit from the local farmers. If he failed to pay the amount to the farmers, they could take legal action against him, he said.  However, the police said the investigation was on and the accused would be apprehended soon.
