Unidentified bike-borne miscreants on Monday looted nearly Rs 78 lakh at gunpoint from officials of different organisations in Bhubaneswar and at Khordha.

The miscreants robbed employees of Aditya Care Hospial of Rs 18 lakh, including a cheque of Rs 1 lakh, in front of the Andhra Bank branch at Damana here. Similarly, another group looted Rs 60 lakh from SBI employees at Khurda’s Biribati Square in the broad daylight.

Aditya Care Hospital’s accountant Jayadev Kumar Das said when he along with his five colleagues, including a driver and an unarmed security guard, was on his way to the bank to deposit the money at around 11 am while the miscreants intercepted them at the bank.

“While getting down from their vehicle near the bank, three miscreants on a bike suddenly accosted us and asked us to hand over the bag containing the cash and the cheque to them. When we refused to do so, they whipped out a revolver and fired a couple of blank shots to the ground,” Das said. “I got scared and handed over the bag to them. They immediately zipped off with the bag towards Damana Haat,” he added.

The Chandrasekharpur police have started investigation into the case.

In the second incident, two miscreants shot at two Khordha branch SBI employees were going in a car to deposit the money at the bank’s Balungaon branch. One of them has sustained serious injuries in the attack, sources said.
