Excise Department officials seized 275 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 28 lakh from Pir Bazaar here on Monday morning.
A drug peddler was arrested in the connection and a motorcycle was seized from his possession.
Following a tipoff about smuggling of the contraband by a bike-borne youth, the excise sleuths carried out raids in Pir Bazaar area and seized the contraband.
The accused used to procure the drug from Jaleswar in Baleswar district and supply it to small traders.
In 2020, around seven kg of brown sugar has been seized by police and excise officials in the State. But it is alleged that the seizures are tip of the iceberg as the kingpins of the trade elude the police dragnet.
