Saga Basti is located at the heart of Steel City here, but had not been supplied with electricity for long 30 years. Thanks to efforts from Rajya Sabha member Dilip Tirkey, the slum was connected with electricity on the Republic Day.
The slum was developed 30 years back by the DAV pond near Basanti Colony. The inhabitants’ principal work is farming vegetables. Though both the State and the Central Governments have introduced many schemes for supply of electricity to the urban poor and slum dwellers, this slum had been neglected for a long time.
After being ignored by many elected representatives in past, the residents of the slum had met Tirkey and aired their grievances to him.
later, Tirkey sanctioned `7 lakh from the MP lAD for electrification to the slum. And on January 26 last, Tirkey inaugurated the electrification to the slum in presence of WESCO representatives, his PA Sultan Khan and the slum dwellers.
