Tension prevailed recently at the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) on a report by the medical that a woman patient has HIV virus though tests in other hospitals revealed she was HIV negative.
Sources said the woman, a resident of Rourkela, had married in Bihar. In February last, she came to RGH to have check-up for pregnancy. However, all hell broke loose when the doctor in the RGH advised her to do HIV and haemoglobin test.
After the test, the RGH reported her to be haemoglobin deficient. At the hospital, she took blood after taking admission there. later, when she did HIV test, the medical report showed her to be HIV positive. She was administered medicines for AIDS but she was feeling quite uncomfortable after taking the medicines.
The victim woman and her relatives then did another test at Ispat market here and the report confirmed that she did not have HIV virus.
The woman, thereafter, met the HIV counsellor and showed him the HIV negative report but counsellor reportedly told her that the report of a private patho lab was not acceptable. Sita delivered a baby girl on September 2 last and the baby girl was also fed with medicines from HIV section of the RGH.
Some persons of a NGO then took the victim to Birmitrapur CHC for doing HIV test. Here also the report showed her to be HIV negative.
When the woman and her relatives insisted upon not taking HIV medicines, tension prevailed at the RGH. After the intervention of senior doctors, situation came back to normal. It was decided that her blood sample will again be sent to Burla for HIV test.
“I have been ostracised after people heard about my HIV. Who is responsible for thisIJ said Sita in a chocked voice. “We have once again taken her blood sample and sent it to Burla for her HIV test for confirmation,” said RGH Deputy Chief Medical Officer SC Kabi.
