In order to eliminate road accidents inside the plant premises, a fresh road safety campaign has been launched inside the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
The genesis of the campaign lies with a finding that 21 per cent of injuries happening inside the steel plant are attributed to road accidents. To create awareness regarding the aspect and dissuading people from opting for high speed, the multi pronged campaign was initiated. Based on the fact that the Factory Rule 62(i) envisages maximum permitted vehicle speed inside a factory unit shall be 20 km per hour, people were counselled to stick to the speed limit for their own safety as well as for the safety of others.
The campaign was organized in the Hot Strip Mill, the Cold Rolling Mill, the Plate Mill, the Pipe Plants and in the SSM. Departmental Safety Officers (DSOs) as well as officials of the Safety Engineering Department participated in the campaign.
Around 1,000 personnel were counselled at different gates and road safety logos were pasted on all kinds of vehicles, from two-wheelers to heavy vehicles. All department/ project heads extended necessary help by engaging their DSOs and Safety Stewards for pasting the stickers on the vehicles of employees/ agencies engaged in their departments as well as in projects. Similar exercises will be conducted at different intervals to create greater consciousness regarding the vital aspect of safety, revealed RSP source, adding that display of banners and hoardings inside the plant and telephonic messages are some other tools being utilised to spread the message.
