R'kela Hi-Tech admission: SC stays High Court order

Published on:

The future of 100 MBBS students, even after completing one year course in the Hi-Tech Medical College, Rourkela, is now uncertain with the Supreme Court recently on an appeal of Medical Council of India (MCI) disallowed admission of these 100 MBBS students of academic year 2015-16.

All the affected students have reportedly gone back to their homes with a sulking mood. Hi-Tech authorities now are deciding to challenge the order with a review petition and the students have to wait for the outcome of review petition.

Sources said the MCI had denied permission of admission for its sanction seat strength of 100 seats to the Hi-Tech Medical College, Rourkela, for the academic year 2015-16, citing some deficiencies in the required criteria. Hi-Tech Medical College had started its admission to its sanctioned strength of 100 seats in the academic year 2013-14 and also taken admission in 2014-15 for the same number of seats.

Hi-Tech challenged the decision of MCI in the Orissa High Court. Besides staying the MCI order, the HC had directed the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Government of India to provide a provisional permission to admit its sanction strength.

Accordingly, the college had received the permission and had admitted 100 students.

The MCI on the other hand had challenged the decision of Odisha High Court order on September 29, 2015 in the Supreme Court and got a stay order on October 16, 2015. But, by then, Hi-Tech had already admitted 100 students for the academic year through its own examination. After completion of hearing on the case, the Supreme Court Bench comprising Justice J Chelameswar, Shiva Kirti Singh and Abhay Manohar Sapre passed the final judgment on September 2 last, allowing the claim of MCI.

“I am completely shocked because after completing one year of my studies, I have got this setback,” said a girl student of 2015-16 batch, on condition of anonymity. “After completing the course for one year, while we were preparing for our examination, the verdict of SC came as a rude shock throwing our career to darkness,” she added.

The institute authorities, however, are still hopeful of turning the table and getting a favorable decision from the Supreme Court through their review petition. “After examining the SC order, we are preparing  a review petition, which would be filed in the Supreme Court very soon,” said Hi-Tech Group of Institutions chairman Tirupati Panigrahi.
