Finally, police arrested and court-forwarded the couple who had allowed their one-and-a-half-month-old ailing son for branding with hot bangles, which led to his death.
Significantly, their three-year-old son was also sent with them to jail as there is no other family member to look after him.
One Chian Barla and his wife Sangita Barla used to stay in a slum in the Deogaon area of Rourkela city. On March 10, their younger son developed illness. The couple took him to Shanti Das, a woman black magician. Shanti branded hot bangle on nine locations of the body of the child. Instead of getting recovery, the child’s conditions worsened. Parents then admitted in the Rourkela Government Hospital where the child died during treatment. On a complaint, Police registered a case and arrested Shanti Das. “The couple was arrested under section 304 of the IPC since they had allowed the child for branding, which was the cause of the death of the child,” said Jalda outpost Bijay Das.
He said since the couple’s three-year-old son was sent with them with permission of the court.
