Rights body seeks ATR on sex assault on girl students

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) within six weeks from Scholl and Mass Education (S&ME) Secretary, besides Balangir Collector and Superintendent of Police (SP) over sexual assault to three girl students.

The order came following a complaint lodged with the Commission by rights activist and Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain on November 18 last year.

The petitioner alleged that three inmates of Kasturaba Gandi Girl’s Hostel in Kholan in Titilagarh block were subjected to sexual assault by the hostel’s watchman Ratnakar Ghibela.

“Around 100 girls are staying in the hostel and due to absence of woman warden and inaction of the school authorities, such immoral activities are taking place in the hostel violating the girl students’ human rights,” the petitioner alleged.

The petitioner prayed the Commission to ensure criminal and disciplinary action against the concerned officials and compensation of `5 lakh to the victims.
