For the last three days, there is an intense students’ unrest in the local Gandhi Institute of Advanced Computer and Research (GIACR). The diploma, graduate engineering and MBA students gheraoed the Principal’s office with slogans against mismanagement in the college.
According to the students, the college is proposing a closure shortly and they, as students, are concerned about their future. They are also protesting against shifting of the examination centre from their own college, ie, GIACR to some other college. So, they demanded continuance of all the streams as committed by the management of the college before admission and non-shifting of the examination centre. Apart from these two primary demands, they also complained about sheer mismanagement of the transport service, hostel facilities, extreme shortage of teaching staff, no placement, etc which were promised to them and their parents during admission. Principal of GIACR Prof Dinkar agreed that there was staff shortage in the college. He strongly denied the closure of the college as there is no official decision.
Notably, the GIACR formerly known as "IACR" was established in the year 1999. Initially, the MCA course was introduced. In 2001 the B Tech Degree Course was introduced with three branches namely Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). In 2002 Mechanical Engineering and in 2003 Civil Engineering courses were further introduced. The management claims that they have full-fledged departments of CSE, IT, ECE, EEE, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering since 2004 and MBA was introduced in 2006. Now they are running Diploma engineering courses. The GIACR is affiliated to the Biju Patnaik University of Technology.
