Rescued jumbo calf dies in Ganjam

The two-year-old male elephant calf, which was rescued from the Pandakholo jungle on Ganjam district on Saturday, died on Sunday while undergoing treatment.

The exact cause of death was yet to be ascertained.

Forest Department officials had rescued the sick calf from the jungle under the Sorada range while patrolling in the area. It was unable to walk at the time of its rescue.

Veterinary surgeons along with Ghumusar South Divisional Forest Officer BK Acharya had rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue operation and treatment.

“Around 24 elephants, divided into different herds, are roaming in the area. The rescued calf might be a member of eight-member herd,” Sorada Forest Range Officer PK Sahu had said yesterday, adding that the herd had been seen camping in the nearby area from where the elephant calf had been rescued.
