An injured baby elephant, which was rescued by the Athagarh Forest officials from Tigiria Jungle over three weeks ago and treated in the office campus, is suffering from acute illness and has stopped eating.

The pachyderm was unable to stand and did not receive any food over the last two days. Even, it was not taking its most favourite sugarcane plants.

Meanwhile, a team of doctors led by veterinary medicine specialist Prof Dr Niranjan Sahoo from OUAT, Bhubaneswar, reached here and treated the ailing wild guest. The team said that the elephant suffers from septicemia, whose condition has deteriorated due to the chilling weather.

Athagarh DFO Arun Mishra said that the elephant had been rescued with deep injury marks on its body. later it was treated and all its wounds had healed but in the last couple of days it suddenly fell ill.

He said lack of doctors in Athagarh was a hindrance in the elephant’s treatment and therefore, he was planning to shift the wild guest to the Nandankanan Zoo in a day or two.
