Release sufficient Phailin aid, demands Ganjam BJP

The executive body of Brahmapur district BJP at its meeting held here on Friday evening expressed serious concern over non-release of adequate financial assistance by the Congress-led UPA Government for the Phailin and flood victims of Ganjam.

The committee also unanimously passed a resolution, condemning the silent and step-motherly attitude of the Central Government towards victims who suffered from such unprecedented twin natural disasters.

Even after a lapse of two months of the cyclone Phailin, the State Government has also miserably failed to bring tangible results in post-Phailin relief, reconstruction and rehabilitation work, more particularly in rural areas, the committee alleged.

lakhs of farmers who have lost their crops in the last natural disaster are still sitting idle at home in search of their livelihood, whereas thousands of hectares of land which still lay covered with sands are waiting for sand lifting and reclamation.

Besides, power to hundreds of lift irrigation points are yet to be restored, water supply in rural areas regularized, cleaning of drains and removal of solid wastes and sanitation work yet to be done, the committee pointed out.

The members also expressed that the post Phailin reconstruction and rehabilitation works claimed to have been in progress in Ganjam is sheer eyewash and is confined to media statements and false propaganda.

During the post Phailin period in particular, both the villages and the urban areas have become mosquito breeding centres and none of the civic bodies including BMC has initiated any tangible action to provide relief to the denizens yet.

Most drains under the BMC are still packed with debris, solid wastes and polythenes giving rise to breeding of mosquitoes and an unhygienic environment. The executive body also demanded plantation of at least 50 lakh trees in Ganjam district.

Even though Ganjam is currently having three Cabinet Ministers, including the Chief Minister and eleven MlAs, none of them has the will power to strengthen the basic infrastructure of the district, the resolution alleged.

An assistance of sum of Rs 1,000 crore sanctioned by the Central Government is absolutely inadequate compared to the magnitude of actual loss incurred, the members pointed out.

The meeting was presided over by BJP district president Bijay Kumar Swain. Among others, Senior BJP leader and former Assembly Deputy Speaker Rama Chandra Panda, senior BJP leader Bhrugu Buxipatra, former State president of BJP Yuva Morcha Bibhuti Jena, district organisational general secretary Sunil Sahu, treasurer Suryanarayan Das, Gopinath Panda, Binod Mishra, Youth leader Saroj Sabat, Prabhat Kiran Sadangi, Rama Samal and RK Patra were present.
